Erving Goffman född 11 juni 1922 i Mannville i Alberta i Kanada, död 19 november 1982, var en kanadensisk-amerikansk professor i antropologi och sociologi, samt författare. Efter studier vid University of Toronto läste han sociologi vid University of Chicago. I samband med att han var knuten till universitetet i Edinburgh utförde han fältstudier på Shetlandsöarna. På 1950-talet arbetade han vid amerikanska National Institute of Mental Health och utförde under ett år

Backstage er de omgivelser, vi selv kan styre, og som ikke har indflydelse på vores handlemønster (Goffman, 1959). Begreppen frontstage och backstage är extra intressanta för min forskningsfråga. De skapar en möjlig tolkning av diskrepansen mellan hur personalen beter sig i mötet med klienten (frontstage) och hur de beter sig backstage, när bara personalen är närvarande (Goffman 2007:97 ff.).
